Reading Science Fiction

Finished Reading 2024: World of Promise by E.C. Tubb šŸ“š

Well, it is January 30 and I’m just about to finish reading my second novel of the month. So I’m getting a slow start. I have gone back to Aikido practice on Monday nights and Saturday mornings. That doesn’t really conflict much with reading time, but it has been a huge use of energy, so I’ve been reading less every day. A tradeoff, for now. I’ll get my wind. I just decided I can’t be a fat bookworm – not good for me. I need to get back to practice, so I have.

Honestly, having the first book of the year (the World of Null-A) suck was not a great start. Such a terrible novel on every level. And yet I tortured myself by plodding through it. Rough. I will not make the mistake again of sinking time, energy, and inertia into a horrible book. Anyhooo…about to finish Dumarest 23. Fun SF adventure novel.

Podcast Episode 33

This is an absolutely horrible novel.

Podcast Episode 32

In this episode, I discuss what I’m reading right now, as well as some activities in my Science Fiction role-playing game.

Making progress on The World of Null-A. It’s a pretty weird book. I’m going to go out on a limb and say it is kind of badly written. The prose style is very weird. More when I finish it.

Book 27 of last year as it turn out will be the first book finished in 2024.

2023 was the best year of reading for me, maybe in my whole life. 26 novels read.

Time to start fresh. It is January 1, 2024. My goal is 3 books a month. 36 books. Let’s do this.

Being interviewed by a gaming podcast in the morning about my 5% per day SF reading project, as well as reading goals and habits in general. Looking forward to it!

Today is Christmas, 2023. My reading goal for the year was 20 books. Thus far I have read 26. I finished one last night - I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson. While the book is about the last man on earth living on a planet of vampires, it is, in fact, science fiction, as it explains the vampires with science. Post-apocalyptic SF. That’s how I would classify it. Really good book. Short, concise, well written, impactful.

Right now it is 8pm, and I’m about to start book 27 for the year. The Planet of Null-A, by A.E. van Vogt. I had started reading a book of short stories by Alan Dean Foster, and in his forward he mentioned this book, so I downloaded it. I’ll get back to the short stories. Given that I still have 6 days left in the month, I’ll probably finish it. 27 books in a year is probably the most I’ve ever read. We’ll see how it goes.
